 “Ranger Echo Rose,” a rumbling voice said.

Taking it slow, she turned in the direction the words came from.

Rey Bowen was looking at her, or rather looking down at her. He wasn’t a giant of a man, just a shade over six feet, but that didn’t stop her from remembering she was at least seven inches shorter and only one hundred twenty pounds. For reasons she was careful not to examine too closely, she’d told herself the breadth of his chest and width of his shoulders were responsible for her unsettling reaction to him.

What was she thinking? Hadn’t she learned, painfully, to keep emotional distance between herself and men? She had, darn it. She’d never drop her guard.

Until she’d done in her ankle, she’d spent much of her time around physical people, most of them men. She still was around more men than women, but in recent months she'd mostly rubbed shoulders with people who spent their days behind desks.

Despite how she'd been forced to earn her living since last summer, she believed she still understood the physical male. When he was around women he was trying to impress, the breed carried himself as if he was a bull elk, strutting a bit, hard muscles pushing against too-tight T-shirts, and gazes giving out bedroom vibes.

Rey did none of those things. Instead, it was as if he’d built an emotional wall around himself. The reason was none of her business, darn it. She had enough to do dealing with her own life. 

An Interview with Vella Munn

What inspired you to write His Mountain Rescue?

  

I’m not sure I had a choice. LOL. I was relaxing with a fellow writer after an intense conference, drinking a glass of wine as we sat outside a mountain cabin watching a storm approach. I was raised in the mountains, mostly in a remote logging town and believe I have the wilderness in my DNA. As the wind kicked up and the sky turned purple, my love affair with nature kicked into high gear. I wanted, no, I needed to write about characters who find healing and second chances while surrounded by nature. In a matter of minutes, I was blabbing to my friend about writing a contemporary romance series with each story taking place during a different season. His Mountain Rescue is the summer story.

When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I think I always wanted to be a writer even though early on I couldn’t articulate what I was feeling. I was in the third or fourth grade when I wrote and illustrated a comic book with the Lone Ranger’s horse Silver as the hero.

What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

I’m too old to remember back that far. J However, I do remember being drawn to fiction books designed for boys. They had so much adventure in them.

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

I’ve long been drawn to romantic suspense but confess to the occasional true crime or man against nature nonfiction. When I’m feeling brave, I’ll pick up a Steven King horror.

What is your favorite book?

Oh gosh, I hate being asked that because for me, a single one doesn’t stand out. One of my favorites is my dear friend Catherine Anderson’s Annie’s Song, an historical with a deaf heroine and the hero who opens the world to her.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

Because I know so many writers, I feel disloyal for naming just one but Catherine’s books always touch my heart.

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

I sometimes think I should come up with a different answer, but it always remains the same. My grandfather was a writer, multi-published in the pulp magazines. He was murdered when my mother was six. I’d love to go back to when he was alive so we could talk shop and I could get to know the man I consider my mentor. I’d also like to observe my grandmother’s life when she was left alone with three small children to raise. She’d been born with a deformed right hand and 60% hearing loss. She’s my hero. She also helped raise me which is another story.

When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

Oh I can procrastinate with the best of them but I’m happier when I’m in the middle of a book than when I’m trying to decide what to write next. Even with some 70 titles under my belt, writing never gets easy, but there’s nothing else I want or am qualified to do.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

I’m owned by two rescue dogs, one a hyper terrier, the other a big, mellow couch potato.

What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

Macaroni and cheese. My own recipe with enough cheese to clog my arteries.

 
Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Absolutely. If your goal is to be published, never lose sight of the fact that this is a business. I’ve always worn two hats, my writer one and my business one. They don’t have a lot in common.

Vella Munn freely admits to being a dedicated and sometimes demented fiction writer. She has always been drawn to nature and those who feel at home in it. A career writer, she has had way over 60 books published, most of them romances both past and present. As far as personal statistics go, she has one husband, two sons, four grandchildren, and is owned by two rescue dogs. Home is southern Oregon within a two hour drive of Crater Lake. She frequently visits Montana in her mind and heart.
